Guest Groups: Contemporary Coastal
My husband and I are building a contemporary beach house down in Lowcountry. We wish to incorporate some coastal components to the decoration, but still stay true to the contemporary style we love. Here are a couple pieces we currently own or have on our wish list. — Beth from Modern Home
Eco Rug
Custom Jute Rug Collection
A chunky jute rug provides an easy touch of coastal decoration to the room. It works as a neutral background for any furnishings you choose.
Iron Fish Art
Stingray Sculptures
We’ve got so many talented regional artists here in Lowcountry. Chase Allen is one I know personally. He has a broad collection available and is prepared to make custom pieces for his clientele. My husband and I have talked about including a school of stingrays into the entry wall.
Timid Whale, By Don Carney – $24
Timid Whale, by Don Carney, is on my wish list. There are a limited number of prints available, therefore I need to quit lusting over it and pull the trigger .
Unicahome
Egg Chair By Nanna Ditzel For Pierantonio Bonacina – $3,960
The Egg Chair is an icon of contemporary Scandinavian design. Wicker, typical in coastal decoration, adds elegance and natural beauty. Even though it can be used outside, I’d place this at the living room or library.
Bleu Nature
Lustre ‘Tundra’ Light
The Lustre Tundra would be perfectly at home over our dining room table. I like that it is somewhat customizable and my loved ones and that I can add to it with driftwood we find across the beach.
Contemporary Artwork – $72
Inhabit has several collections that would work well with a contemporary coastal scheme (for example: Seagrass, Kelp, Coral and Plankton). Plus, the brand makes it effortless to mix and match your own artwork bedding and other accessories throughout your house.
DwellStudio
Scandinavian Fish Serving Boards – $175
These fish serving boards are too cute. They might just have to stay out on the counter in any way times.
DwellStudio
Draper Stripe Rug, Persimmon/Cream – $450
Nothing says nautical such as a striped rug. I am thinking about incorporating the Draper rug from Dwell Studio into the boys’ area and can’t wait to see the way the punchy bold stripes add to the space.
Design Public
Thomas Paul Bath Mat, Shell – $40
This shell tub mat now lives in our guest bathroom. It’s both fun and sophisticated and works well in the space.
Pottery Barn
Weathered Painted Oars – $29
Buy these weathered oars today! They’re wonderful! I was so unhappy if they sold out last season and I am thrilled to see Pottery Barn attracted them back.
IKEA
Alseda Stool – $29.99
Ikea has taken the Alseda stool for quite some time now, which is a testament to the popularity of this item. I’ve seen it at a few magazine house tours and it looks quite large end.
2Modern
Gus Chunk Dining Table – $1,450
My family is on the market for a brand new table. The top contender thus much is this one. The clean lines and exaggerated thickness suit our modern flavor, while the mild timber and the bench-style chairs match in with the coastal style of our beach house.
Tropical Decorative Accents – $24.95
Faux coral is still a popular trend. How about foregoing white and opting for a nice punch of colour with crimson instead?
Etsy
Large Vintage Glass Fishing Floats By Uncommon Eye
Etsy is a superb resource for vintage glass fishing floats. The floats come in many different beautiful colors and a few even have the original netting.
Bleu Nature
Chandelier Anuri
This really is a driftwood lamp from Bleu Nature I like. The mod shape is reminiscent of a Sputnik lamp.
Pottery Barn
Richard Taylor Scallop Shell Bowl – $149
I found these amazing giant clamshell bowls at a store window at downtown Beaufort a while back and knew I wanted one for our house. The bowls can be used for an assortment of items, but I am considering filling it with succulents and putting it on the back porch.
IKEA
SALONG Vase, Turquoise – $4.99
I really like the pretty sea blue colour of this handmade vase. The price is really hard to beat.
IKEA
SMYCKA Artificial Leaf – $2.99
Place a faux palm frond in a simple vase for a quick and easy coastal decoration. Ikea has some fantastic affordable choices.
Pottery Barn
Sand Dollar Vase Filler – $16.50
Used as vase fillers, such as monochromatic sand dollars are easy enough to be minimal and contemporary rather than kitschy.
Crate&Barrel
Driftwood Big Ball – $34.95
I’d love to bring a big and small driftwood ball into the vignette in my entry, but I am convinced my two small boys could split them in almost no time, believing they were fun new toys. I’ll have to keep an eye out for something a bit more kid friendly.
