Renovated Dude Ranch in Wyoming

Quick Canyon Ranch, the Escape home of Clint and Becky Pickrel, is perched on the so-called “Border of Earth” in the Bottom of Wyoming’s Big Horn Mountains. The calmness in their little bit of heaven is so palpable that the couple will beverage it.

Becky worked together with local Sheridan, Wyoming, architect Ross E. Iverson to design their mountainside retreat. Attempting to pay homage to the first house, once a working dude ranch, and the surrounding countryside, they used a mixture of wood, locally sourced stone and reclaimed barn wood. The main house on the property is a tribute to the rustic and romantic West with contemporary styling and amenities.

Getting to Quick Canyon Ranch is a dusty trip. After you exit off the street and drive along a bumpy road, rock chucks, wild turkeys and antelope are often the only traffic you will see. The main house nestles among a bunch of trees at the conclusion of a big circular driveway, which encircles a sunken planting area.

Views of endless sky, craggy mountain ridges and rolling green hills surround the ranch. The sky is like a giant blanket over the mountains.

Clint and Becky live a short drive away in Gillette, Wyoming, but escape Quick Canyon Ranch whenever they can. Becky keeps the design blog Woven Decor, and the few are equally active leaders in a Foursquare church, and that retains their evenings busy.

Next to the kitchen is an eat-in breakfast area with doors resulting in a patio. Light floods the distance, making an perfect nook for reading the morning paper or swishing down several OJ.

Becky’s brother, Rick Remington of Remington Construction)based in San Clemente, California), crafted the habit built-in shelving. The additional storage and banquette seating anchor this side of the space and provide the ideal foil for upholstered taupe twill chairs from Baxton Studio Forza.

On the opposite side of the kitchen is a long farmhouse-style dining table, grounded with a luxurious Oriental rug that echoes the reddish tones of the timber from the adjoining great room.

The bedroom of the house showcases a fascinating mixture of classic ranch style and contemporary detailing. Rather than combating the bowling-alley hallway, Becky chose to accentuate its length with a graphic runner that ties the entire wing together.

The original bedroom doors got a contemporary twist with a vibrant shade inspired by the hallway runner.

The doorways set the tone and colour palette for each room, from orange crimson to purple into the greenest of aquas. Becky carefully chosen artwork and accessories to match each jewel-tone door.

The master bedroom and ensuite bathroom sit in the very end of the long hallway. A velvety red chair sits in a corner nook where sun floods in and at which the rushing roar of the creek can be heard inside.

The creek sits just beyond the master bedroom. Outbuildings in varying degrees of disrepair sit along its banks, past the house. Fixing these extra buildings is following on the long design to-do record that Clint and Becky have dreamed up.

The massive stone fireplace is the most striking part from the downstairs area. The fireplace is first, but has been updated in stature to give it even more presence in the room. Custom made built-ins on either side include function and storage.

A custom wine cupboard down the rear hall is nestled between two concrete walls. The paneled wall and herringbone brick flooring add interest to this small but usable space. Becky made textured metallic artwork with pictures of blossoms to accent the rear wall.

A small bathroom beside the wine cupboard uses a distressed chest for the dressing table and a textural stone sink.

The arty shower is lined with layered stone made with fossils in the area. Becky discovered the fossils on eBay from a private seller and added the bits as if they had settled naturally into the crumbling, piling layers of the Earth.

Clad in wood and stone, the patios provide plenty of outdoor eating choices. An outdoor living room set offers a place to gather around the stone fireplace and chat with friends, or enjoy the nearby spa.
