The Way to Prepare Metal for Priming and Painting

Surface preparation is the trick to success once you prepare metal for priming and painting. Paint won’t adhere to filthy, oily surfaces. Some metals are pre-coated having an oil that’s intended to prevent rust from forming on the surface. This oily residue has to be removed and the surface must be cleaned before priming and painting the alloy. These steps are vital in order to prevent flaking and peeling afterwards. Use a rust-inhibiting metal primer and follow along with a rust-inhibiting metal paint to ensure a long-lasting paint finish.

Remove all rust from the metal using a nylon brush.

Sand the alloy with 600-grit sandpaper to smooth out rough places and scuff the surface.

Wipe the alloy together with mineral spirits to remove oil and dirt.

Cover all areas you don’t want to get painted with paper. Secure the paper using masking tape.
