My husband and I are building a contemporary beach house down in Lowcountry. We wish to incorporate some coastal components to the decoration, but still stay true to the contemporary style we love. Here are a couple pieces we currently own or have on our wish list. — Beth from Modern Home

We’ve got so many talented regional artists here in Lowcountry. Chase Allen is one I know personally. He has a broad collection available and is prepared to make custom pieces for his clientele. My husband and I have talked about including a school of stingrays into the entry wall.

The Egg Chair is an icon of contemporary Scandinavian design. Wicker, typical in coastal decoration, adds elegance and natural beauty. Even though it can be used outside, I’d place this at the living room or library.

The Lustre Tundra would be perfectly at home over our dining room table. I like that it is somewhat customizable and my loved ones and that I can add to it with driftwood we find across the beach.

Buy these weathered oars today! They’re wonderful! I was so unhappy if they sold out last season and I am thrilled to see Pottery Barn attracted them back.

Alseda Stool – $29.99
Ikea has taken the Alseda stool for quite some time now, which is a testament to the popularity of this item. I’ve seen it at a few magazine house tours and it looks quite large end.

Gus Chunk Dining Table – $1,450
My family is on the market for a brand new table. The top contender thus much is this one. The clean lines and exaggerated thickness suit our modern flavor, while the mild timber and the bench-style chairs match in with the coastal style of our beach house.

Faux coral is still a popular trend. How about foregoing white and opting for a nice punch of colour with crimson instead?

Etsy is a superb resource for vintage glass fishing floats. The floats come in many different beautiful colors and a few even have the original netting.

Richard Taylor Scallop Shell Bowl – $149
I found these amazing giant clamshell bowls at a store window at downtown Beaufort a while back and knew I wanted one for our house. The bowls can be used for an assortment of items, but I am considering filling it with succulents and putting it on the back porch.

Place a faux palm frond in a simple vase for a quick and easy coastal decoration. Ikea has some fantastic affordable choices.

Sand Dollar Vase Filler – $16.50
Used as vase fillers, such as monochromatic sand dollars are easy enough to be minimal and contemporary rather than kitschy.
Crate&Barrel
Driftwood Big Ball – $34.95
I’d love to bring a big and small driftwood ball into the vignette in my entry, but I am convinced my two small boys could split them in almost no time, believing they were fun new toys. I’ll have to keep an eye out for something a bit more kid friendly.
