How to repair a Drape Pulley

On a traverse rod that gets daily use, the pulley is the moving component that takes the brunt of wear. The traverse system is made up of pull cord that runs in a loop during the track of this rod and around pulleys in the corners. The monitor is a channel that accommodates the cord and the carriers that slide across the rod. The pull cord is attached to learn carriers that go when the string is pulled, carrying the drapes using them. For the traverse rod to perform, the pulleys must function with each pull of the cord.

Drapery Stacks

A normal center-draw traverse rod pulley system operates using four pulleys and a pull cord that closes or opens the drapes — 2 pulleys are in each corner. Each end of this cord is fastened to a master carrier; both master carriers fulfill the middle of the rod. Additional carriers slide in a track within the rod. They slide freely, pulled behind the master carrier in the middle to the sides, carrying the drapes along the rod. A center-stack rod opens in the middle and collects, or “stacks,” the drapes on each side of the window. Traverse rods may stack the drapes all to one side or another, opening and closing across the entire width of this window.

Replacement Components

Although different brands of traverse rods might have different pulley assemblies, they’re all similar. You’ll find the pulleys from the corners of the traverse rods, sometimes mounted in an enclosed pulley casing to keep the cords correctly aligned. If a pulley wheel is in fact broken, then you can contact the store where you purchased the hardware, or the maker, for replacement components. A broken pulley assembly generally snaps or screws into place in the corner of this rod. To replace a broken pulley, disengage the rod in the wall mounts, remove the broken pulley assembly, and replace the pulley assembly with a new one. Check the packing for special instructions.

Restringing Principles

When you remove and replace the pulley assembly, then you also should restring the cord across the pulleys. While you’re able to untie the existing cord and reuse it, it’s a good idea to replace used cord with new for smoother performance. Purchase a package of replacement cord in a local home store or drapery facility. Thread the cord through the rod track and around the pulleys, after the course of the original cord. Turn the cord ends in the master carrier and analyze the very long loop of cord, correcting the cord so the master carriers are centered when the string is pulled into the closed position. The pulleys themselves don’t require adjustment other than the correct placement of the cord.

Weights and Measures

1 reason why pulleys wear out or break is the drapes could be too heavy for the rod. A lightweight rod is great for sheer or lightweight drapes, but also for lined drapes, insulating drapes or additional wide window treatments, you might need to put money into heavy-duty traverse rods. Buy the drapes first, then match the capability of the rod into the burden of the drapes.
